A very special little scottie girl named
Abbie was released to North Texas Scottie Rescue on 9/3/06. She is
only 6 years old but looks and acts like she is 12. She is from east
Texas and has lived the last several years of her life outside. Abbie
has a large tumor on her mammary glands, allergies, skin issues (elephant
skin on her tummy), eye and ear infections, her front teeth have been
worn completely away and the rest of her teeth are in terrible condition...
but we are most concerned about the tumor. Abbie will be examined by
our vet tomorrow morning and we will post more information about her
condition.
Abbie is such a sweet and darling little scottie girl...
we are keeping all fingers and paws crossed that the tumor is benign
and she will be given a second chance.

UPDATE 9/5/06:
Abbie will have surgery to remove the
large tumor from her mammary gland on Friday, Sept. 8, 2006.
Abbie was examined by Dr. McGuire of Carrollton Animal Hospital
today. The results from her blood panel and heartworm test will be back
on 9/7/06.
Abbie has a baseball-sized firm mass (tumor) on her right
inguinal mammary gland that appears to have some lymph node involvement.
It is full of infection and is secreting a watery fluid mixed with pus.
It is possible there are malignant mammary tumors with metastasis but
we will not know for certain until after surgery, biopsy and histopath.
Abbie's front incisors and canine teeth are worn down and
she has moderate to severe dental tartar on her other teeth. Abbie's
right eye has a lot of purulent discharge and her cornea is dry. Her
skin is diffusely thickened and lichenified with seborrhea.
Abbie also has a severe case of hookworms.
Medications: ciprofloxacin 500 mg for the infection and pus
inside the tumor and mammary gland, panacur for hookworms, ketoconazole
50 mg twice daily for yeast infections, medicated baths with malaseb
shampoo every 2-3 days, ottomax for her ear infections, optimmune for
KCS (dry eye), and lot's of TLC.

Abbie is such a sweetheart!
She has only been in rescue
for a few days
and already has her own fan club.

UPDATE 9/8/06:
Abbie's white blood cell count was still off
the charts so her surgery has been rescheduled for Monday and she will
continue taking antibiotics over the weekend. Overall Abbie is doing
really well, her eyes are clearing up and her energy level has improved.
She continues to wag her tail a mile a minute and has claimed the couch
as her personal throne. She is such a little princess!
Abbie had another spa treatment (malaseb shampoo, tea tree oil conditioner
& massage) and is sporting a new summer haircut! After leaving the
vet's office Abbie enjoyed a small order of french fries which she polished
off in a flash!

UPDATE 9/11/06:
Abbie had surgery this morning at Carrollton
Animal Hospital to remove the large mass located on her mammary gland.
There were no complications during surgery and all went as planned. Dr.
McGuire removed two masses which were sent out for biopsy and the results
will be back within 2-3 days. Abbie is resting comfortably at the clinic
and will be ready to return to her foster home later today.
Abbie says AROOOO and Thank You for all the crossed paws and continued
support!

UPDATE 9/15/06:
Office Visit - Abbie's temperature is normal and
the long incision line looks good. Abbie has some swelling at the abdominal
mammary gland which is probably due to changes in lymphatic drainage. Suggest
warm water hydrotherapy twice a day. Abbie also has some irritated skin
and tissue on the upper medial thigh. This area was raw and irritated before
surgery and a small area of skin has sloughed off.
Abbie will go back to the vet for follow up chest radiographs later this
week.
MEDICATIONS: Piroxicam, Silver sulfadiazine for the skin irritation.

Abbie says Thank You for the continued
prayers and positive thoughts. We are keeping all fingers and paws crossed
for little Abbie.
